In January Hill was transfered to take command of troops in his native North Carolina, threatened by a Northern offensive. It was thought to be a temporary transfer and Robert Rodes took command as senior brigadier, but it became a permanent move.

Doles Brigade swapped two North Carolina regiments for two Georgia regiment from Talliaferro's Brigade of Jackson's Division, creating an all-Georgia brigade for Doles.
