Rodes briefly commanded the Second Corps during the Battle of Chancellorsville when Jackson and Hill were both wounded, leaving Ramseur in command of the division. Rodes was promoted to Major General and given permanent command of the division on May 7.

After the battle Colquitt's Brigade was sent to North Carolina in exchange for the Daniel's Brigade.
