Peter Turney organizes a company of men after a secession meeting in Winchester; these later become Company C, and the nycleus of the regiment.

Organized at Winchester, Tennessee under Colonel Peter Turney

Left by rail for Virginia

May 8

Mustered into service at Lynchburg, Virginia

May 17

Travelled by rail to Richmond and drilled by Virginia Military Institute cadets.

Posted to Harpers Ferry as part of Johnston's Division, Bee's Brigade

July 21

Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)

 

General William Whiting takes over the brigade after General Bee dies of his Manassas wound.

September 30

Duty along the Potomac between Occoquan and Aquia Creeks

At Dumfries, Virginia, under Brig. Gen. Whiting and Maj. Gen. Holmes

Became part of the Tennessee Brigade (replacing Maney's First Tennessee Regiment) under Brig. Gen. Samuel Anderson, part of General Whiting's Division

 

Moved to the Peninsula as part of A. P. Hill's Division. General Anderson retired due to health, being replaced by the 7th Tennessee's Robert Hatton, promoted to brigadier general.

General Hatton is killed and General James Archer takes command of the brigade.

Lost the regimental colors to the 13th New York Infantry

Battle of Fredericksburg

Lost 57 men, including Colonel Turney, who was woundd and never returned to field service. Lt. Colonel N.J. George took over command of the regiment.

May 3, 1863

Battle of Chancellorsville

Archer's Brigade becomes part of Heth's Division of A. P. Hill's Third Corps.

July 1 - 3

Battle of Gettysburg

Lost 16 killed, 67 wounded and 95 missing out of 281 engaged, including Major Felix G. Buchanan (WIA), commanding. The regiment took part in the initial heavy fighting on July 1st, as well as Pickett's Charge (more propery, the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge) on July 3. The 1st made it to the stone wall north of The Angle but was unable to hold its position and lost its colors to the 14th Connecticut Infantry.

 

The brigade was consolidated with that of Brigadeir General H. H. Walker. Major Buchanan continued to command the regiment.

Colonel Fry takes over brigade as General Walker is wounded.

2nd Maryland Battalion added to Brigade; Colonel George returns to command of the regiment

Genral Archer returns from captivity to command the brigade, but with his health shattered from prison, he dies on October 24.

Colonel Robert Mayo takes command of the brigade, followed by Colonel William McComb of the 14th Tennessee

April 9, 1865

Surrendered at Appomattox 8 officers and 30 men under Major Buchanan
