William H. Sickles

 

Union soldier, Medal of Honor recipient

 

William H. Sickles was born on October 27, 1844 in Herkimer Co., New York. At the start of hte war he was living in Fall River, Columbia County, Wisconsin.

 

On May 11, 1861, at the age of sixteen, he enlisted in Company B of the 7th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on March 31st, 1865, at Gravelly Run, Virginia, when he "with a comrade (Albert O'Connor), recaptured a Union Officer from a deteachment of 9 Confederates, capturing 3 and dispersing the remainder."

 

Sickles mustered out on July 3, 1865, with the rank of sergeant. He died on September 26, 1938 in Orting, Pierce Co., Washington, and is buried at the Soldier's Home there along with his comrade, Albert O'Connor.
