The Military Distirct of the Potomac was created on July 25, 1861 by consolidating the Military District of Washington and the Department of Northeastern Virginia. It was redesignated the Department of the Potomac on August 15, 1862, but is better known as the Army of the Potomac. Major General George McClellan officially took command on August 20.
