Illinois Regiments and Independent Companies

Illinois provided 256,868 men in 17 regiments, 3 battalions and 17 independent companes of cavalry, 35 light artillery batteries, and 156 regiments and 11 independent companies of infantry to the Union army during the war. Most of these fought in the Western Theater, but a small number found their way to the east.
