Massachusetts Regiments, Batteries and Independent Companies

Massachusetts provided to the Union Army 5 regiments and 3 battalions of cavalry; 4 regiments, 1 battalion and 30 independent companies of heavy artillery; 18 batteries of light artillery; 2 companies of sharpshooters; and 71 regiments and 3 battalions of infantry. Most served in the eastern theater, with exceptions listed at the bottom.

These units served their entire histories outside the eastern theater were: the Independent Cavalry Battalion and 2nd Cavalry Battalion; the 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery, 2nd Regiment Heavy Artillery and several independent companies of heavy artillery; the 4th, 6th, 12th, 13th and 15th Batteries Light Artillery; and the 27th, 31st, 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 45th, 47th, 48th , 49th, 50th, 52nd, 53rd, 54th, and 55th infantry regiments The 62nd Infantry never completed its organizaton, which was underway at war's end.
