The 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment lost 11 officers and 271 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 2 officers and 151 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War.

 

It is honored by a monument at Gettysburg (near right) as is Colonel Vincent (far right).

The regiment was commanded at Gettysburg by Captain Orpheus S. Woodward while its colonel, Strong Vincent, led the brigade. Colonel Vincent was mortally wounded in his heroic defense of Little Round Top.

 

From the monument: "The brigade was hurried to Little Round Top about 5 p.m. of July 2nd. This regiment taking position in front of this monument and repulsed several desperate charges of the enemy after which this Regiment assisted in driving the enemy beyond and taking possession of Big Round Top. On the morning of the 3rd, rejoined the Brigade on the left centre."
