July 5 | The Matthews (Virginia) Light Artillery was organized in Mathews County with 72 men of Company H of the 61st Virginia Militia Infantry under the command of Captain Andrew D. Armistead. The other officers were First Lieutenant John F. Stoakes, Second Lieutenant Albert F. Diggs, and Third Lieutenant Nathan H. Walker. |
