July 5 The Matthews (Virginia) Light Artillery was organized in Mathews County with 72 men of Company H of the 61st Virginia Militia Infantry under the command of Captain Andrew D. Armistead. The other officers were First Lieutenant John F. Stoakes, Second Lieutenant Albert F. Diggs, and Third Lieutenant Nathan H. Walker.
July 18 Mustered into Confederate service but continued to serve in the militia regiment.

March 22 Reorganized for the duration of the war.

Posted at Gloucester Point assigned to Crump’s Command, Rains’ Division, D.H. Hill’s Command, Department of Northern Virginia.
