Two more brigades were added to Kimball’s Brigade to create a 3rd Division before the corps left Washington for the Maryland Campaign. It suffered heavy casualties at the Battle of Antietam, especially the 1st Division in the West Woods and the 2nd Division at the Sunken Road.
