Ohio ranked third in population among the Northern states, behind New York and Pennsylvania. It provided 309,906 men to the Union Army. They were organized into:
- Infantry: 227 regiments, 1 battalion and 5 independent companies
- Cavalry: 13 regiments, 5 battalions and 10 independent companies
- Heavy artilery: 2 regiments
- Light artillery: 42 batteries
- Sharpshooters: 10 companies
The majority of these served in the west, but a large number, listed below, served in the east.
