On May 22, 1863 War Department General Order 143 established the United States Colored Troops. Over 178,000 men volunteered for service, and by the end of the war African-Americans made up 10% of the United States Army. Of the 175 regiments of infantry and cavalry raised nationwide, 34 infantry regiments fought in the Eastern Theater in the last two years of the war.
