United States Regiments & Batteries


West Virginia came into existence halfway through the war in June of 1863 when the northwestern part of the slave state of Virginia seceded from the state and returned to the United States. West Virginia provided to the Union Army 32,068 men in 7 regiments of cavalry, 8 batteries of artillery, and 20 regiments, 1 battalion and 1 independent company of infantry.
