Colonel Joseph A. J. Lightburn
Cox left two brigades behind in West Virginia and took two brigades east to join Pope at the end of August. They arrived in time to help cover Pope’s retreat to Washington, and became the Kanawha Division of the 9th Corps of the Army of the Potomac during the Maryland campaign. In October Cox’s command reunited in Western Virginia as part of the Department of the Ohio.
