On June 13 the the Army of Northern Virginia's Second Corps (except for three artillery battalions) moved to the Shenandoah Valley,
becoming the nucleus of the Army of the Valley. On June 18 Arnold Elzey and Robert Ransom arrived from Richmond, Elzey to take over Breckenridge's Infantry Division and Ransom the cavalry. Breckinridge was made commander of an unofficial corps consisting of his and Gordon's Divisions, while Early retained direct command of the rest of the army.. |
