Confederate States Army * Army of the Valley
< to May • June 1862 • to July >
Commanded by Major General Richard S. Ewell
Ewell’s Division suffered relatively few casualties in the Battle of Cross Keys on June 8, but two brigade commanders were wounded. Arnold Elzey would soon return to command, but George Steuart, who had just taken over the Second Brigade, would not return to the army until the Gettysburg campaign. Most of the Second Brigade was merged into Elzey’s Brigade, now temporarily under its senior colonel, James Walker.
