When Lee’s army moved north to meet Pope and while Hill was temporarily in command of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia Hill’s Division remained in the Richmond area.  The division had no overall commander for several weeks, with the brigades reporting directly to Lee’s headquarters. Gustavus Smith briefly took command. Then Hill returned to command the division at the end of the month, when it was ordered to rejoin the army for the Maryland Campaign, leaving the Richmond area on August 30.
