The division was moved from the Richmond area to join Lee’s main army at the beginning of the Maryland Campaign. It took heavy casualties in the fighting on Maryland Heights during the Siege of Harpers Ferry on September 13, at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on September 14, and in the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) on September 17.
