The FIrst and Third Cavalry Divisions and one birgade of horse artillery were transferred to the Middle Military Division, Army of the Shenandoah, on August 6. 1864. The Second Cavalry Division and two batteries of horse artillery remained with the Army of the Potomac under the direct command of General Meade.
