Five companies were organized at Abingdon under the command of Colonel Alfred C. Moore:

Company A – Russell County – Captain William McJessee
Company B – Wythe County – Captain William R. B. Horne
Company C – “Carroll Marksmen” – Carroll County
Company D – “Rifle Rangers” – Carroll County
Company E – Carroll County – Captain Alexander Haynes

Five other Local and Special Service companies that were assigned to be part of the regiment never joined.

Battle of Middle Creek

The regiment lost five men killed and twelve wounded.
March 27-April 3 Companies G, H, & I  were organized.
May Reorganized with nine companies. Assigned to District of Abingdon, Department of Southwestern Virginia

December Assigned to Colston’s Brigade, Elzey’s Command, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia

March The regiment totalled 732 men.
March 30 Colonel Moore resigned due to his advanced age (he was 58) and failing health. Lieutenant Colonel James Giles was elected colonel.

May Assigned to Corse’s Brigade, Pickett’s Division, 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia
June-July Detached along with the rest of Corse’s Brigade from Pickett’s Division to guard Hanover Junction outside Richmond and missed the Gettysburg Campaign.
