Iowa

United States Regiments & Batteries

Iowa provided 75,797 men to the Union cause in 9 regiments of cavalry, 51 regiments of infantry and 4 batteries of light artillery. Almost all fought in the Western Theater, but three regiments of infantry found themselves whisked away from duty around New Orleans to join Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah in the fall and winter of 1864. *
