The Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee |

The Army of the Valley commanded by Major General Jubal A. Early was killed or captured at the Battle of Waynesboro on March 2. Early barely escaped capture and made his way to Richmond. But Lee sent him home, then relieved him of his command, thanking him for his service. Only Lomax’s cavalry, wintering at Millboro, escaped to join Johnston’s Army in North Carolina. |
