The Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee rested in the lower Shenandoah Valley while McClellan’s army was largely stagnant. Jeb Stuart led another daring cavalry raid into Pennsylvania, crosing the Potomac near Williamsport and riding through Chambersburg and Cashtown before returning to Virginia via White’s Ford. The raid failed in its goal of destroying a railroad bridge over the Conocoheague River but was successful in every other way, including embarassing Lincoln just before the midterm elections. |
