Army the Potomac, under the command of General Joseph Edward Johnston

On September 25 Johnston’s General Orders No. 31 established the 2nd Corps under the command of Major General Gustavus W. Smith. It was to include all troops not already assigned to Beauregard’s 1st Corps. The corps organization was still not recognized under Confederate law.
