November 25 Created at Charleston, Tennessee, from the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Hilliard’s Legion, and the Legion’s 4th Artillery Battalion. Thhe 59th Alabama was under the command of Colonel Bolling Hall, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel John D. McLennan, and Major George W. Huguley. It was assigned to Gracie’s Brigade, Buckner’s Division, Department of East Tennessee.Company A – Tallapoosa County – Captain John H. Dillard

February 12 Captain Dillard of Company A died. Captain John H. Porter took over command of the company.
April Moved to Virginia
April 25-30 Captain John F. Wise of Company B resigned. Captain John E. Hall took over command of the company.
Captain William H. Stuckey of Company E resigned. Captain James L. Williams took over command of the company.

Drewry’s Bluff

The regiment siffered heavy casualties. Colonel Hall was shot in the leg, which was amputated. His brother, Adjutant Crenshaw Hall, was shot in the neck. Colonel Hall would not recover from his wound, and died of complications in 1866. Lieutenant Colonel John D. McLennan briefly took over command of the regiment until he was killed.

Captain H. H. Rutledge of Company H was killed. Captains S. E. A. Reaves of Comany F and R. Fuller Manly of Company I were wounded.

Major George W. Huguley took command of the regiment and would be promoted to lieutenant colonel. Captain Lewis H. Crumpler was then promoted to major. Captain Zachary Daniel took over command of Company H.

The regiment reported 240 men. Captain John E. Hall of Company B was wounded.

December 2 Brigadier General Gracie was killed and Colonel Moody of the 43rd Alabama Infantry took command of the brigade.

Hatcher’s Run

The regiment lost its flag. Colonel Daniel S. Troy of the 60th Alabama Infantry was carrying it forward while leading a charge  when he was shot down by Private George W. Tompkins, Company F, 124th New York Infantry Regiment, who captured the flag. The flag was returned to the State of Alabama in 1905.

Captain Zachary Daniel of Company H was killed and Captain R. Fuller Manly of Company I was wounded and captured.

March 15 Captain S. E. A. Reaves died.

April 8 Colonel Stansel took command of the brigade when Brigadier General Moody was captured.

The 59th Alabama Infantry Regiment surrendered 9 officers and 101 enlisted men.
