“18th Georgia Heavy Artillery Battalion”

The battalion was organized as infantry but was assigned to a heavy artillery role in Savannah and Charleston and was often referred to as a heavy artillery battalion.

March Three companies were organized at Savannah under the command of Major John Screven, a judge from Savannah..
April Assigned to Mercer’s Brigade, Military District of Georgia, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, serving as heavy artillery.
June Assigned to Military District of Georgia, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

July Assigned to the 1st Sub-division, 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
August-September
Charleston Harbor

The battalion defended Battery Wagner.

October Assigned to 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
1864
May Moved to Virginia with 225 men under the command of Major William S. Basinger. Assigned to the 1st Military District, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia and stationed at Chaffin’s Bluff on the James River.
