“8th North Carolina State Troops”

1861
September 14 The 8th North Carolina Infantry Regiment was organized near Warrenton at Camp Macon under the command of Colonel Henry M. Shaw, Lieutenant Colonel William J. Price and Major George Williamson. Seven companies were mustered into state service and assigned to the Department of North Carolina.

Company A – Pasquotank County, Captain James Hinton
Company B – Currituck County, Captain James M. Whitson
Company C – New Hanover County, Captain Henry McRae
Company D – Granville County, Captain A. J. Rogers
Company G – Pitt County, Captain Edward Yellowly
Company H – Cabarrus County, Captain Rufus A. Barrier
Company K – Rowan County, Captain P.A. Kennerly

September 16 Company I (Alamance County, Captain Gaston D. Cobb) was added.
September 20 The regiment was mustered into Confederate service.
September 28 Companies E (Cumberland County, Captain James M. Williams) and F (Warren County, Captain J. Jones) were added.
1862
January Moved to Roanoke Island and assigned to District of the Albemarle, Department of Norfolk. Captain Williams of Company E resigned and was replaced by Captain J. R. Murchison.
February 8
Roanoke Island

The regiment was captured. It surrendered 568 officers and men.

February 21 Paroled at Elizabeth City.
August The regiment was declared exchanged.
September Reorganized near Raleigh at Camp Magnum.
October Assigned to French’s Command, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
October 25 Major Williamson resigned. Captain James Hinton of Company A was promoted to major and 1st Lieutenant William H. Bagley was promoted to Captain of Company A.
November Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, District of Cape Fear, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
December 17
Goldsboro Bridge

The regiment lost 9 casualties.

1863
February 1 Lieutenant Colonel Hinton was promoted to colonel of the 68th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Major Rufus A. Barrier was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Captain Henry McRae of Company C was promoted to major and 1st Lieutenant Charles H. Barron was promoted to captain of Company C.
February Moved to Charleston, South Carolina and assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, 1st Military District of Sourh Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
March Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, Military District of Georgia, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
March-May Returned to Clingman’s Brigade, 1st Military District of Sourh Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
May-July Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, Department of North Carolina
July 8 Captain James M. Whitson of Company B was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
July 18
Battery Wagner
July-November Assigned to 1st Military District of Sourh Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
August 3 Captain Edward C. Yellowby of Company G was promoted to major, and Lieutenant Amos J. Hines was promoted to captain of Company G.
October Major Edward Yellowby was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 68th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Captain John R. Murchison  of Company E was promoted to Major and Lieutenant Luther R. Bruce was promoted to Captain of Company E.
