Created with four companies as Dunn’s Partisan Rangers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose C. Dunn and Major J.R. Claiborne.

October 26 Company F (Captain Meredith T. Norman) was added.
November Converted to regular cavalry and designated 37th Virginia Cavalry Battalion.
