Burning of ChambersburgThe town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania was burned when citizens were unable to come up with a $100,000 ransom. Regimental Adjutant Caulder A. Bailey had become drunk and separated from his men and and a gang of citizens killed him. |

Battle of MoorefieldThe Confederates were surprised by an early morning attack by Averill’s Union Cavalry. Although much of Johnson’s Brigade were scattered and captured, the 8th Virginia Cavalry had enough warning that they were was able to mount up and form a battle line. The regiment’s flag was captured by Captain Thomas Kerr of the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism. |
