1862
September 5 The 61st North Carolina Infantry Regiment was organized at Wilmington under the command of Colonel Janes D. Radcliffe, Lieutenant Colonel William S. Devane, and Major Henry Harding. Assigned to District of North Carolina, French’s Command, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.

November Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, French’s Command, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
December Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, District of Cape Fear, French’s Command, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
1863
February 18 Moved to Charleston and assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
March 2 Moved to Savannah and assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, Military District of Georgia, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
March 9 Returned to Charleston and assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
May Assigned to Clingman’s Brigade, Department of North Carolina.
July 10 Assigned to 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The regiment would lose 6 men killed, 35 wounded, and 76 missing in the fighting around Charleston on James, Morris, and Sullivan’s Islands from July 10 to September 6.
