May 10-13 Tyler’s Company moved to Fortress Monroe, Virginia and was attached to the 3rd Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company M.
May 14 Tyler’s Company mustered in for three years, Chamberlin’s Company mustered in for three years and assigned to 3rd Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company I.
May 17 Leach’s Company moved to Boston
May 19-21 Chipman’s, Doten’s and Barnes’ Company moved to Fortress Monroe
May 19-23 Leach’s Company and Chamberlin’s Company moved to Fortress Monroe
May 21 Clark’s Company mustered in for three years
May 22 Leach’s Company mustered in for three years and attached to 4th Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company L. Chipman’s Company mustered in for three years and attached to 3rd Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company D. Doten’s Company mustered in for three years and attached to 3rd Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company E. Barnes’ Company mustered in for three years and attached to 4th Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company K.
May 22-26 Moved to Fortress Monroe, Va. and attached to 4th Massachusetts Militia Infantry as Company M.
July The Battalion organized at Fort Monroe. Va., attached to the Department of Virginia:

  • Company M, 4th Militia, designated as Rifles
  • Company M, 3rd Militia, designated as M
  • Company L, 4th Militia, designated as L
  • Company D, 3rd Militia, designated as D
  • Company E, 4th Militia, designated as E;
  • Company I, 4th Militia, designated as I
  • Company K, 4th Militia, designated as K.
July 16 and 26 Companies L and M detached for duty at Fort Wool, Rip Raps, five Companies at Hampton
July 30 Five Companies on garrison duty at Fortress Monroe
August 5 Moved to Camp Hamilton
August 18 To Newport News
October 21 Action on Warwick Road
November 3 Companies L and M rejoined Regiment at Newport News.
December 13 The battalion was transferred to the 29th Massachusetts Infantry:

  • Rifles as Company A
  • Company M as Company B
  • Company L as Company C
  • Company D as Company D
  • Company E as Company E
  • Company I as Company I
  • Company K as Company K
