“Third Ida Harris Guard”

The 12th New York Cavalry Regiment lost 2 officers and 20 enlisted men killed in action; I officer and 16 enlisted men died of wounds received in action; and 5 officers and 178 enlisted men died of disease and other causes, of whom 1 officer and 84 enlisted men died in Confederate prisons.

Organized in New York City over a period of months for three years service under the command of Colonel James W. Savage, Lieutenant Colonel Philip G. Vought, and Majors. J. Ward Caspar, Rowland R. West, Floyd Clarkson, and Rodney M. Taylor.
