| August | Recruiting began in response for President Lincon’s request for 300,000 nine months men. Most of the regiment was recruited in Providence, but Companies B & F were recruited in Pawtucket, Central Falls and Smithfield. |
| October 1 | Organized at Camp Stevens in Providence, Rhode Island and mustered in for nine months service under the command of Colonel Edwin Metcalf, Lieutenant Colonel J. Talbot Pitman, and Major Nathan F. Moss.
