Confederate Armies & Departments in the Eastern Theater

The Confederate Army of the Shenandoah under the command of General Joseph Johnston joined up with the Army the Potomac at Manassas. Both fought and won the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) on July 21.
After the Battle of Manassas the combined armies were known as the the Confederate Army the Potomac. General P.G.T. Beuregard gave up command of his army to General Johnston, who was his senior. Beauregard would remain for several months in the awkward and uncomforable role of second in command.
The Army of the Peninsula under the command of Colonel John Magruder defended the eastern approaches to Richmond.
The Department of Norfolk under the command of Brigadier General Benjamin Huger was responsible for the defence of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
