The Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee reorganized after its losses at Chancellorsville, forming a third corps under A.P. Hill. As Lee prepared for an advance into the North, Union cavalry surprised Stuart at Brandy Station in a day-long battle. Afterward Lee moved into the Shenandoah Valley, overwhelming Federal forces in the Second Battle of Winchester, and continued on into Pennsylvania. Elements of Lee’s army reached the Susquehanna River at Wrightsville and threatened the state capital at Harrisburg before they were recalled to concentrate near the strategic road rub of Gettysburg.
