The Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee turned back Hooker’s attack in desperate fighting around Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. Longstreet with two of his First Corps divisions was unable to make it back to take part in the battle from their expedition to southern Virginia over the winter. Although a brilliant victory for Lee the cost was high, including “Stonewall” Jackson, mortally wounded in a friendly fire incident after leading the stunning flank attack that won the battle. |
