The 16th North Carolina Cavalry Battalion was organized by combining companies from three other organizations under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John T. Kennedy:
Companies D, E & I of the 62nd Georgia Cavalry (these were men from North Carolina)
Company C of the 12th North Carolina Cavalry Battalion
Companies F, G, H, I & M of the 7th Confederate Cavalry. (these were men from North Carolina)

Company A – was Company E, 62nd Regiment Georgia Cavalry
Company B – was Company I, 62nd Regiment Confederate Cavalry
Company C – was Company F, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry
Company D – was Company G, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry
Company E – was Company M, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry
Company F – was Company H, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry
Company G – was Company C, 12th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry
Company H – was Company D, 62nd Regiment Georgia Cavalry
Company I – was Company I, 62nd Regiment Georgia Cavalry
