June 20 Created from seven companies that were excess in the reorganization of the 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment. Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Oliver R. Funsten and Major William Patrick. Assigned to Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Valley District.
August Assigned to Cavalry Brigade, Jackson’s Command, Army of Northern Virginia.

August-November Assigned to Robertson’s-Jones’s Brigade, Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia.

Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)

Major Patrick was killed. Captain Thomas Massie was promoted to major and took command of the battalion.

Crossed the Blue Ridge at Snickers Gap and scouted around Winchester

September 7
Darksville

Scouted towards Harpers Ferry. Skirmished with Federals near Darksville and pursued them to Martinsburg, taking a number of prisoners. On returning to Darksville were attacked by Federals, losing several killed and wounded.

Picketed the fords of the Shenandoah and Potomac

Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam)

Picketed Antietam Creek below Sharpsburg.

September 18-19

Served as rearguard while the Army of Northern Virginia retreated across the Potomac.

December Assigned to Jones’s Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Valley District.
