Named after the Governor of Maryland, Augustus W. Bradford,

1863
August 8 The 3rd Maryland Cavalry Regiment organized at Baltimore, Maryland for three years service under the command of Colonel Charles Carroll Tevis, Lieutenant Colonel Byron Kirby, and Major William Kelsey.

  • Companies A, B, C and H were recruited in Baltimore City
  • Companies D, E, F and G were recruited at Fort Delaware from Confederate prisoners of war who had taken the oath of allegiance to the United States
  • Company I was recruited in Frederick County and Baltimore City
  • Company K was recruited in Baltimore City and from the re-enlisted men of the Second Maryland Cavalry, a six months service regiment which had mustered out.

Duty in the Defenses of Baltimore, Maryland attached to Cavalry Reserve, 8th Army Corps, Middle Department

January Ordered to New Orleans, Louisiana, then to Madisonville, Louisiana and duty there assigned to Defenses of New Orleans, La., Dept. of the Gulf

December Consolidated to a battalion of six companies. Assigned to District of Southern Alabama, Military Division of West Mississippi.
December 15 Major William Kelsey was discharged.

January 26 Captain Henry E. Clark of Company F was promoted to major.

April 30 Ordered to New Orleans, Louisiana.
May Assigned to 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, Cavalry Corps, West Mississippi.
June 20 Ordered to Natchez, Mississippi and assigned to Dept. of Mississippi.
September 7 The 3rd Maryland Cavalry mustered out at Vicksburg, Miss.
