July 20 | The 2nd New York Battery was organized by transfer of detachments from 8th and 29th Regiments New York Infantry. These were detached to serve the guns of Varian’s New York Battery after that battery’s term of enlistment expired during the Bull Run Campaign. |

December 7 | Mustered in and designated as the 2nd New York Independent Battery. The battery was commanded by Captain Louis Schirmer, who as a lieutenant in the 29th New York Infantry Regiment had commanded a section of Varian’s battery at the Battle of Bull Run.
