The Army of the Valley commanded by Major General Jubal A. Early had pulled back to the Upper Shenandoah Valley after the defeat at Cedar Creek and the devastation of much of the Valley in The Burning. It was evident that Early’s army was at the end of its effectiveness, and the three divisions of the Second Corps were ordered to return to the Richmond area. |
