Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early
Having called Kershaw’s Division back to Richmond in November, Lee now recalled the three divisions of the Second Corps. Early would remain behind in the Valley to command the remnants of his army there, while the Second Corps was placed under the command of John B. Gordon.

Gordon’s Division left the Army of the Valley on December 9th and returned to the Army of Northern Virginia.
