Organized at Oswego, New York for one year’s service under the command of Colonel Wardwell G. Robinson, Lieutenant Colonel William P. McKinley and Major William D. Ferguson.

  • Company H at Hastings, Parish and West Monroe
  • Company I at Palermo, New Haven, Mexico, Hannibal and Constantia
  • Company K at Schroeppel, Parish, West Monroe, Fenner and Richland
September 12 Companies A, B, D and F Mustered in at Elmira, New York and left the state for the Shenandoah Valley under the command of Major W. D. Ferguson. Attached to 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 6th Corps, Army of the Shenandoah.
September 16 Companies C, E, G, H, I and K left New York for Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, in the Department of Virginia and North Carolina, under the command of Colonel Robinson.

Battle of Cedar Creek

Companies A, B, D and F were engaged under the command of Major Ferguson, losing killed or mortally wounded First Lieutenant Augustus Phillips of Company D; Corporal John M. Wing and Private Job Babcock of Company F; Privates Peter E. Eldred, Andrew W. Fish, Hale Henry and Dwight Parkhurst of Company A, Joseph Menney and John P. Sabin of Company D; and 34 enlisted men wounded.
October-December Companies A, B, D and F – Duty at Kernstown
December 3-6 Companies A, B, D and F moved to Washington, D.C., then to Petersburg, Virginia.
December The regiment reunited and was assigned to Separate Brigade, Army of the James at Hartson’s Landing, Virginia. Company I was detached at Fort Pocahontas.

April 20 Private Daniel Cole of Company K was killed by the accidental explosion of shell
June 29 The 184th New York Infantry Regiment mustered out at City Point, Va. under the command of Colonel Wardwell Robinson, Lieutenant Colonel William McKinley and Major William Ferguson. Recruits were transferred to the 96th New York Infantry.
