The original 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment lost 1 enlisted man to disease during their three months service in the Civil War. After the regiment mustered out it reformed for three years service, serving in the Western Theater before being transferred to the Shenandoah Valley in July of 1864. This regiment lost 1 Officer and 114 Enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 170 Enlisted men to disease, a total of 288.

11th Indiana Infantry Regiment – Three Years Service

“Wallace’s Zouaves”

1861
August 31 The 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment reorganized in Indianapolis under the command of Colonel Lew Wallace and Lieutenant Colonel George McGinnis. The regiment was trained in Zouave tactics. It was outfitted with a Zouave uniform consisting of a grey jacket with red trim, a dark blue vest, and grey pantaloons. Soon the grey jacket was replaced with a black jacket with sky blue trim, and the grey pantaloons with sky blue.
September 3 Colonel Lew Wallace was promoted to brigadier general and Lieutenant Colonel George McGinnis was promoted to colonel.
September 6 Moved to Paducah, Kentucky and assigned to the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Tennessee.

Colonel Daniel Macauley was badly wounded. He was unable to return to field service, and transferred to command of the 9th Regiment of the Veteran Reserve in Baltimore. Lieutenant Colonel William W. Darnall took command of the regiment.
