May 24 Colonel Hughston was discharged. He had accepted the appointment with the understanding that he would only “raise the regiment and bring it into the field” and his resignation was approved with the comment “He is an excellent gentleman but not a good military officer.”(1) Lieutenant Colonel Gregory was promoted to colonel and took command of the regiment.
