“Seward Infantry” “Cayuga county regiment”

May 22 | Organized at Elmira, N.Y., and mustered in for three months state service under Colonel John S. Clarke, Lieutenant Colonel Seward and Major James Ledlie. Nine companies were from Cayuga County and the tenth from Seneca County. U. S. percussion muskets, model 1840, calibre 69 were issued to the men along with uniforms. tents and national and state flags. |
June 5 | The 19th New York Infantry Regiment left the State for Washington, D.C and duty in the Defenses of Washington |
July 6 | Moved to Kalorama Heights and attached to Sandford’s Division, Patterson’s Army. The regiment was issued Harpers Ferry rifles to replace its outdated muskets. |
July 7-8 | Moved by rail via Baltimore, Harrisburg, Chambersburg, Hagerstown and Williamsport to Martinsburg, Va. |

Occupation of MartinsburgFour companies of the regiment forded the Potomac along with a detachment of the 28th New York and occupied Martinsburg, Virginia on a foraging expedition. They were attacked by Confederate cavalry. Two enlisted men were taken prisoner. |

August | “In August, the term of enlistment expired and special orders were issued providing for the remuster of the men for the remainder of the two years’ period. These orders were received with open dissatisfaction and by refusal of obedience on the part of 206 members, 23 of the greatest offenders being sent to the Dry Tortugas and the others placed under arrest until they were ready to be remustered. The 23 were finally released on condition that they serve the remainder of the two years in the 2nd N. February 17 | Four newly recruited companies were added from New York City, Rome, Syracuse and Tompkins county. |
February 21 | The 19th New York Infantry Regiment was then reorganized as the 3rd Regiment New York Light Artillery. Companies A-E became Battery A, Battery B, Battery C, Battery D, and Battery E, Company G became Battery G and Company I became Battery I. |
