1861
April The 8th New York State Militia was organized for three months’ United States service under Colonel George Lyons, Lieutenant Colonel Charles G. Waterbury and Major Obediah F. Wentworth
April 20 Left State for Anapolis on the steamship Alabama and the ship Montgomery
April 26 Mustered in at Annapolis.
May 8 Advanced to Relay House outside Baltimore with the 6th Massachusetts Infantry.
May 19 Detatchment of 600 men under Lieutenant Colonel Waterbury and Major Wentworth went into Baltimore by train and took posession of Federal Hill, remaining until relieved by Pennsylvania troops a few days later.
June 8 Proceeded to Washington to duty in the Defenses of Washington at Kalorama
June Crossed into Virginia and attached to Porter’s 1st Brigade, Hunter’s 2nd Division, McDowell’s Army of Northeast Virginia
July 16-21 Advance on Manassas, Va.

Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)

The regiment lost 8 men killed, 17 men wounded , and 4 officers and 9 enlisted men captured.

July 24 Left for New York
August 2 Mustered out at New York City at the expiration of its term of enlistment.

May 29 Organized for three months’ United States service under Colonel Joshua M. Varian as the 8th New York National Guard and left State for Washington, D.C.
June-September Duty in the defences of Yorktown, Virginia
September 9 Mustered out

June Entered service for thirty days under the command of Colonel Joshua M.  Varian.
June 18 Left State for Harrisburg, Pa. and duty there attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Dept. of the Susquehanna.
June 23 Skirmish at Shippensburg, Pa.
June 29 Skirmish near Fort Washington, Pa.
July 1 Skirmish at Carlisle, Pa.
July 23 The 8th New York State Militia mustered out at New York City
