| August – September | Organized in Warren County for the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. But before arriving at the regimental muster point at Erie that regiment had filled the regulation number of companies. |
| September 4 | James’ Independent Pennsylvania Infantry Company was mustered in as an independent company with no regimental affiliation under the command of Captain DeWitt C. James. Left by rail for Harrisburg. |
| September | Armed at Harrisburg and sent to the Cumberland Valley to defend against Lee’s First Invasion of the North. |
| September 16 – 26 | Posted on picket duty north of the Antietam battlefield near the Pennsylvania state line and captured 150 Confederate stragglers. |
| End of September | Returned to Harrisburg. Captain DeWitt C. James was appointed as Provosr Marshall of Harrisburg. The company was employed in arresting deserters in Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, Cumberland, Franklin, and Fulton counties. |

| February 2 | Lieutenant Eben W. Ford was killed in Fulton county while arresting deserters. |
| March 20 | Moved to Washington D.C. for provost duty at Washington. Assigned to Defenses of Washington, 22nd Corps. |
| May | Moved to Alexandria under the command of Lieutenant George W. McPherson. Attached to Captain William Borrowe’s Pennsylvania Independent Battery H and assigned to Slough’s Command, Garrison of Alexandria, 22nd Corps, Dept. of Washington. Employed in provost duty and against Confederate partisans. |
| July | Deployed as skirmishers during Early’s attack on Washington’s northern defenses. |
| September | Relieved from duty with Battery H and assigned as guards at the military prison in Alexandria. |
