*Note: Major General David B. Birney had been ill since June, at first with minor diarrhea, but it grew steadily worse. By early October it became so serious that he had to be transported in an ambulance, and his corps medical director had him sent home to Philadelphia. He would die there on October 18 from uncontrollable gastrointestinal bleeding, probably caused by typhoid fever.
