The Army of the Shenandoah, formally known as the Middle Military Division, Department of the Shenandoah, was organized in August of 1864. The 6th Corps and the 1st and 3rd Cavalry Divisions were transferred from the Army of the Potomac and the 19th Corps from the Department of the Gulf. Both were added to the Army of West Virginia.
