The Army of the Shenandoah, formally known as the Middle Military Division, Department of the Shenandoah, was organized in August of 1864 by the transfer of the 6th Army Corps and the 1st and 3rd Cavalry Divisions from the Army of the Potomac, the detachment of the 19th Army Corps from the Department of the Gulf, added to the Army of West Virginia (Eighth Corps).
